Short answer: cancelled and short-notice tests return to the official MyRoadSafety booking system. Slots are limited and offered first-come-first-served. An alert can tell you that availability was detected, but only MyRoadSafety can confirm and complete a booking.
Why cancellations matter so much
Waiting times vary by centre, eligibility and demand. The RSA confirms that when a driving test is cancelled at short notice, the appointment is made available to the public through MyRoadSafety. These slots are limited, so flexibility and a quick response can help.
Getting an earlier date isn't about luck. It's about being the first person to see a slot appear.
The problem with manual refreshing
The traditional approach is to log in to the RSA booking site, scan for available dates and log out again. This works, but it's inefficient: slots can appear at any time of day, and available slots are offered first-come-first-served. Manual checks can therefore miss availability that appears between visits.
A better approach

Realistic checklist
- Register with the RSA and finish your Essential Driver Training (EDT) lessons before you start hunting for a slot.
- Pick 2–5 centres you're genuinely willing to travel to. Compare the current official waiting-time estimates rather than assuming one type of centre is always faster.
- Install the app and enable notifications; test them to make sure they aren't muted.
- When an alert lands, jump straight into the official RSA booking site to complete the booking.
- Keep the app running in the background; alerts are lightweight.
From alert to booking
When an alert arrives, open MyRoadSafety to check the date and complete the booking. Acting quickly gives you the best chance of securing popular availability.
